Diesel Injector Nozzles & DLLA Codes Explained

The nozzle is the business end of a diesel injector – the part that actually sprays fuel into the cylinder. And the code stamped on it, like DLLA 145 P 2144, isn’t random: it tells you the nozzle’s type, its spray angle and more. Here’s how to read it.


Every diesel injector ends in a nozzle, and the nozzle does the most demanding job in the whole fuel system: atomising fuel into a fine mist at exactly the right angle and pressure, thousands of times a minute, for the life of the engine. Get the nozzle wrong and the engine runs badly, smokes, or fails emissions – even if everything else is perfect.

Nozzles carry their own designation code, separate from (but linked to) the injector’s part number. Once you can read that code, a string like DLLA145P2144 stops being a mystery and starts telling you exactly what you’re holding.

Nozzle vs injector – a quick clarification

The nozzle is a component inside the injector assembly. On many conventional and some common rail injectors, the nozzle can be replaced on its own rather than swapping the whole injector – which is why nozzles are sold and searched for separately. So when you’re sourcing, the first question is always: do you need a complete injector, or just the nozzle? Getting that right saves time and money.

Breaking down the DLLA code

Take a typical code: DLLA 145 P 2144. Here’s what each part means.

D — the origin. The first letter reflects the manufacturer or design origin of the nozzle. D indicates Bosch. (Other historic letters exist for other makers – B for Lucas-CAV in Britain, R for Roto-Diesel in France – but on Bosch parts you’ll see D.)

LL – the nozzle type and stem. These letters describe the nozzle construction:

  • L – short-stem, hole-type nozzle
  • LL – long-stem, hole-type nozzle
  • N – pintle nozzle (a different design used in older indirect-injection engines)

So “DLL” tells you it’s a Bosch long-stem, multi-hole nozzle – the type used in direct-injection and common rail engines.

A – the fuel feed configuration. The letter after the type describes the needle and fuel-admission arrangement (for example, whether it has an annular slot and how the feed openings are set up). It’s a construction detail rather than something you’ll usually search by.

145 – the spray cone angle, in degrees. This is the number that matters most day to day. It’s the angle of the fuel spray cone as it leaves the nozzle. A 145° nozzle sprays at a different angle than a 155° one — and that angle has to match the shape of your engine’s combustion chamber and piston bowl. Fit the wrong angle and the fuel sprays onto the wrong place, giving poor combustion, lost power and higher emissions.

P – the needle diameter / size class. This letter identifies the needle diameter series of the nozzle (P being one of the common classes). It reflects the physical size of the nozzle’s internal needle.

2144 – the Bosch design index. The final number is the unique identifier for that exact nozzle design. It encodes the specifics that you can’t read directly from the code – the number of spray holes, their diameter and geometry, the sac shape, anti-coking features and flow rate. Two nozzles with the same DLLA type and angle but different final numbers are different parts, tuned for different engines. This number simply increments as Bosch releases each new design.

The DLLA code and the 0433 number are the same nozzle

Here’s the link that trips people up. A nozzle has both a DLLA code and a standard Bosch 0433 number, and they refer to the same physical part. For example, DLLA145P2144 is the same nozzle as 0 433 172 144. One isn’t a substitute for the other – they’re two ways of naming one component. And that nozzle, in turn, is the one fitted inside a specific injector – so a nozzle code, a 0433 number, an injector number and an OEM number can all point back to the same job on the same engine.

Why the spray angle is the detail to get right

Of everything in the code, the spray-cone angle is where a wrong choice does the most damage. The angle determines where the atomised fuel lands inside the combustion chamber. Engine designers match the nozzle angle precisely to the piston bowl geometry so the fuel burns cleanly and completely.

Fit a nozzle with even a slightly different angle and the spray pattern no longer matches the chamber: fuel hits the cylinder walls or misses the ideal burn zone, and the result is rough running, black smoke, power loss, higher fuel consumption and failed emissions. This is exactly why you can’t simply pick “any DLLA nozzle that fits” – the numbers have to match.

Hole-type vs pintle nozzles

Most modern heavy-duty and common rail engines use hole-type nozzles (the DLL… codes) with multiple precisely-drilled spray holes for direct injection. Pintle nozzles (DN… codes) have a single, shaped orifice and were common in older indirect-injection engines. Identifying which family you need is the first branch in choosing the right part.

Where to find the number

The nozzle designation is laser-etched or stamped onto the nozzle body itself. If the nozzle is already fitted inside an injector, you’ll often work from the injector’s part number instead and cross-reference to the correct nozzle. Always work from the number on the part where you can, rather than an old invoice that might list a superseded version.
